How to clean your motorcycle engine?
Are you a motorcycle enthusiast and want to keep your baby in perfect condition ? You are right! Regularly maintaining your engine is essential to ensure the longevity of your machine. At Antre du Motard, we give you all our advice on how to effectively clean your motorcycle engine .
Why is it important to clean your engine?
Riding every day also means having to deal with the dirt and grime that accumulates on your motorcycle. And the engine is no exception! Oil, mud, dust, everything gradually builds up on the various elements at the heart of your two-wheeler.
If you don't clean your engine regularly , you risk several problems:
- Engine overheating due to lack of cooling
- Premature wear of mechanical parts
- A loss of power and performance
- More frequent breakdowns
In short, a dirty engine is an engine that runs less well and will have a shorter lifespan. Suffice to say that maintenance is essential !
When should you clean your engine?
There is no absolute rule, but we can give you some pointers:
- After each outing on wet or muddy roads
- Before an oil change
- Before a complete overhaul of your motorcycle
- When you notice that your engine is running hotter than usual
As a general rule, it is recommended to clean your engine at least every 6 months . This helps keep your machine in perfect working order.
How to properly clean your motorcycle engine?
Here's our 5-step method for a deep clean :
1. Prepare your workstation
Start by equipping yourself with the right tools and products:
- A powerful engine degreaser
- A stiff bristle brush
- Microfiber cloths
- A bucket of hot water
- Protective gloves
Place in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside, to avoid breathing in degreaser fumes.
2. Disassemble removable parts
Remove everything that can be removed: covers, fairings, air filter, etc. This will allow you to access all areas of the engine more easily.
3. Apply the degreaser
Spray the engine degreaser generously on all dirty surfaces. Leave it on for a few minutes to allow the product to take effect.
4. Brush and rinse
Using your brush, scrub vigorously to remove all the dirt. Then rinse thoroughly with hot water to remove all residue.
5. Dry and reassemble
Once the engine is well rinsed, use your microfiber cloths to absorb all the moisture. You can then reassemble the parts previously disassembled.
And there you have it! Your engine is now perfectly clean and ready to offer you new driving sensations.
Some additional tips
- Avoid using a high pressure cleaner which could damage certain sensitive elements.
- Choose degreasing products specially designed for motorcycle engines, which are more powerful and suitable.
- Remember to protect electrical parts (ignition coils, wiring, etc.) with a plastic bag during cleaning.
- Check the level and condition of your engine oil regularly after cleaning.
