How to shift gears on a motorcycle like a pro?

Are you a new rider and still struggling to shift gears smoothly? Don't panic, we were all beginners once! Today, I'm going to give you all my best tips for shifting gears like a pro on your motorcycle.

Understanding how the gearbox works

The first thing to understand is how your motorcycle's gearbox works. Each motorcycle has its own gearbox , with a different number of gears. Typically, you'll find motorcycles with 5 or 6 gears.

Each gear corresponds to a different ratio between the engine and the rear wheel. The higher the gear, the faster the bike will go with the same engine speed. Conversely, lower gears allow for more torque when starting off or on hills.

The key to shifting gears well is to feel how the box works and to know which gear you are in.

Basic technique for shifting gears

Now that you understand the principle, here is the basic technique for changing gears:

  1. Fully release the clutch
  2. Close the throttle slightly
  3. Move the gear selector up to shift up a gear, or down to shift down a gear.
  4. Slowly release the clutch

It's a gesture that may seem simple, but it requires a little practice to master it perfectly. You have to find the right balance between the clutch and the gas so that the gear change is smooth.

Some additional advice

Here are some more tips for shifting gears like a boss:

Anticipating gear changes

Try to anticipate upcoming gear changes , based on your speed and engine rpm. This will allow you to be ready at the right time and shift smoothly.

Look at the road, not the gearshift

Avoid looking down at the gear selector. Keep your eyes on the road ahead and feel the gear shift with your hand and foot.

Adapt your technique according to the situation

On the road, in the city or on the motorway, the way you change gears can vary slightly. Be aware of your surroundings and adapt your technique accordingly.

Do not force

If you feel like the gear shift is not going well, don't force it. Release the clutch, close the throttle a little and start again. Smoothness is the key to successful gear changes.

Train regularly

As with anything, practice is key to mastering gear shifting technique. Don't hesitate to practice regularly , whether on open roads or in more complex traffic conditions.

With practice and good reflexes, you will see that changing gears will quickly become a natural and fluid gesture. You will then be able to concentrate on your driving and fully enjoy your motorcycle!
